They produce works that have reverberated round the world. From Beijing to Yunnan, a group of artists variously called contemporary or avant-garde – are painting, sculpting, photographing, and installing images of China as they see it. They create works in their own likeness in the name of cynical-realism; paint updated landscapes that are a world away from traditional Chinese works; or burn Cultural Revolution materials to form collages of Mao and the international art world is intrigued. Episode 3: A New Voice in China – Zeng Fanzhi, Xue Song, Guo Jin Zeng Fanzhi calls them the fortunate generation. Having escaped the brunt of the Cultural Revolution, these three artists in their early 40s have the benefit of experiencing Chinas years of greatest social change, while reaping the benefits of its consumerist burst. How does this impact their output, and shape their view of their home country, and the world?
